As Kanjithanda Kushalappa Aiyapa enters the 90th year of his remarkable life, it is an opportune moment to look back on the extraordinary journey of Coorg Golf Links (CGL), a Society that has transformed the sporting landscape of Kodagu and introduced generations of people to the game of golf.
Born on 8 June 1937, Aiyapa is known as a soft-spoken and unassuming gentleman. Yet beneath that quiet exterior lies a steely determination that can overcome any challenge. It was this determination, coupled with a clear vision, that led to the creation of Coorg Golf Links, a Society that today stands among India’s most successful golfing institutions.
The story of CGL began in the late 1980s when a small group of golf enthusiasts in Kodagu dreamt of building a golf course in the district. Led by Aiyapa, they chose a democratic and inclusive path. Rather than creating a private enterprise, they established a Society that would encourage the game of golf and make it accessible to as many people as possible. That vision became reality when Coorg Golf Links was registered as a Society under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960, on 14 October 1993.
The early years demanded perseverance and sacrifice. Aiyapa and a dedicated group of Founder Members, including Messrs C. S. Nanjappa, A. T. Cariappa, M. N. Cariappa, M. G. Ganesh, K. A. Chinnappa, C. A. Muthanna, I. K. Anil and a few others, worked tirelessly to acquire land, raise resources and develop the first nine holes of the golf course. They persuaded friends, families and fellow enthusiasts to join the Society, laying the foundation for a thriving golfing community.

No account of the growth of this Society would be complete without acknowledging the unwavering support of Aiyapa’s late wife, Mrs. Rani Aiyapa, and their three sons. Their encouragement enabled him to devote the next three decades of his life to building and nurturing the Society. The experience of institution-building also inspired his eldest son, Dr. Sunil Muddaiah, to establish another pioneering institution in Kodagu – the Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences.
What began as a modest Society with barely twenty committed members steadily evolved into a golfing landmark. As the course expanded into a full-fledged 18-hole championship layout, golfers from Mysuru, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and many other cities across India became members of the Society, enriching its diverse and vibrant character.
Today, Coorg Golf Links has grown into a Society of nearly 1,900 members, with almost two-thirds coming from outside Kodagu. This remarkable growth reflects the strength of the founding vision. By remaining a Society dedicated to participation rather than exclusivity, CGL has encouraged thousands of people to take up golf. Its junior golf programme has introduced many local children to the sport. Among them is Trishul Chinnappa, the first home-grown golfer from CGL to turn professional and compete at the highest levels of the game.
The success of Coorg Golf Links demonstrates what can be achieved when a community comes together under the banner of a Society. Long before “Atmanirbhar Bharat” became part of the national vocabulary, Aiyapa and his fellow members created a self-sustaining institution built on collective effort, shared commitment and a common passion for sport.
As members and well-wishers celebrate the legacy of this iconic Society, they also celebrate the vision, dedication and perseverance of K. K. Aiyapa.
In recognitionof his unparalleled contribution to the creation and growth of Coorg Golf Links, the Society appointed him as its Patron for Life. His pioneering role in establishing CGL as a golfing beacon was also recognised beyond the golfing community; on 4 November 2017, he was awarded the Fd Mshl Cariappa – Gen Thimmaya Lifetime Achievement Award by Gen Bipin Rawat, then Chief of the Army Staff, during the latter’s visit to Kodagu. This honour stands as a fitting tribute to a lifetime devoted to institution-building and community service.
As he enters his 90th year, the golfing fraternity joins in wishing him good health, happiness and many more years on the fairways. Aiyapa’s place in the sporting history of Kodagu is secure, and his remarkable service to golf deserves recognition from both the Government of Karnataka and the Indian Golf Union.
