Madikeri Constituency MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda said that greater emphasis should be placed on managing waste collected within the limits of the Madikeri Municipal Council in a sustainable and scientific manner.

Speaking to the Municipal Council administration after witnessing a demonstration on green waste management by the South Kodagu-based ‘Clean Coorg Initiative’ at the Municipal Council Hall, he said that garbage disposal in the future should not be carried out in the inadequate manner presently followed at Stuart Hill on the outskirts of the city. Necessary precautions should be taken in this regard, he added.

Waste management was being carried out in a highly scientific manner in Koramangala, he said. MLA Mantar Gowda suggested that the Municipal Council administration should visit the area, study the system and take necessary steps to adopt suitable practices in Madikeri.

Office-bearers of the ‘Clean Coorg Initiative’ from South Kodagu gave a demonstration on the disposal of wet and biodegradable waste collected within urban areas.

They explained that it would be sufficient to provide a small space in each ward for the disposal and processing of biodegradable waste. Alternatively, even if a small space was provided to serve two or three wards, it would be possible to manage the waste scientifically. MLA Mantar Gowda instructed the Municipal Council to study the waste disposal systems being implemented in other districts, consider the details presented during the demonstration by the organisation, hold further discussions and take an appropriate decision.

Municipal Council President P. Kalavathi, Vice President Mahesh Jaini, Municipal Commissioner Ramesh, members, officers and staff were present at the meeting.
