Drugstores across Kodagu district remained shut on Wednesday in response to the statewide bandh called by the Drugstores’ Association demanding a ban on online drug trade.
More than 200 medical stores across the district participated in the shutdown. Kodagu District Drugstores’ Association President Ambekal Jeevan Kushalappa thanked customers for extending their cooperation during the bandh.
The association also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the district administration. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sahana H. Hadimani received the memorandum from representatives of the association. District President Jeevan Kushalappa, Joint Secretary Vasanth Kumar, Vice President A.K. Vinod and Treasurer Prasad Gowda were present.
In the memorandum, the association urged the Central Government to immediately intervene and curb the illegal online sale of medicines. The association leaders stated that online medicine sales were adversely affecting public health and causing difficulties for consumers.
They alleged that medicines were being sold online without proper medical consultation, resulting in health complications for several patients. The association also pointed out that small medical traders across the country were suffering losses due to online transactions.
The memorandum appealed to the Prime Minister to take urgent steps to prohibit illegal online medicine sales and safeguard the interests of consumers.
