If Kodagu suffers losses due to cloud seeding, state government will be directly responsible: Virajpet BJP spokesperson Cheppudira Rakesh Devaiah warns.
The BJP opposes cloud seeding in Kodagu, stating that it will cause more losses than benefits to Kodagu district and its people. It also demands that the government itself should compensate for any losses caused by cloud seeding, said Virajpet BJP Mandal spokesperson Cheppudira Rakesh Devaiah.
Issuing a press release, he said that the Karnataka government has announced the ‘Karnataka Emergency Cloud Seeding Program-2026′ for 60 days and 200 hours of aerial flights at an estimated cost of Rs. 28.52 crore to overcome the shortage of monsoon rains and drought conditions. The state government said the decision was taken because 27 districts in the state are facing a shortage of rainfall. In the current situation, if cloud seeding is carried out in Kodagu, farmers’ crops will be damaged and blight will spread. The roads in Kodagu will deteriorate further due to excessive rainfall, and there is a high possibility of landslides.
The state government, which is taking up cloud-seeding operations in the interest of the state, should first keep in mind the interests of the people of Cauvery Nadu and Kodagu. He warned that if Kodagu suffers losses due to cloud seeding, the state government will be directly responsible for them.
When the BJP-led government was in power, compensation for crop losses was provided to farmers. However, after the Congress government came to power, this was stopped, resulting in injustice to farmers, he further stated. Rakesh Devaiah, who accused the state government of failing to listen to and respond to the plight of Kodagu, demanded that the state government immediately announce special grants and crop-loss compensation.
It is alleged that the estimated Rs. 32 crore allocated through the NDRF for emergency works in Kodagu district last year was transferred to another district without being utilized properly. This was a great injustice to Kodagu district, he said, expressing dissatisfaction and stating that such a stepmotherly attitude could not be tolerated.
