Sustainable Pepper Cultivation and Plantation Management Program

Coorg Pepper Association (CPA)

Black pepper has been one of the world’s most valuable commodities for centuries. India, once producing nearly 65,000 tons annually, has seen production decline to nearly 55,000 tons in recent years due to diseases, aging vines, soil degradation, and unsustainable cultivation practices – despite lakhs of pepper vines being planted over the last 25 years.

In Karnataka, farmer-led organizations such as the Black Gold League (BGL), Indian Pepper League (IPL), Hasiru Organic, and the 7 Bean Team in Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts have emerged as pioneering private plantation extension groups.

Their efforts have highlighted the importance of understanding the physiology and sustainable cultivation practices of black pepper.

At the same time, global and Indian demand for pepper continues to grow steadily.

Sustainable cultivation, however, is possible only in specific agro-climatic regions such as the Malnad belt. Kodagu (Coorg) is one such ideal region where black pepper can become a strong supplementary – or even primary – source of income for coffee-growing families.

Having personally attended these field-oriented learning sessions and interactions, I strongly believe that practical classroom training combined with field-level discussions can transform our plantations towards sustainable growth and higher productivity.

With this vision, we propose to launch the Coorg Pepper Association (CPA) – a knowledge-sharing and farmer-training initiative focused on sustainable plantation management.

Why This Initiative?

Across our districts, lakhs of pepper vines are dying, and revival rates remain poor. Excessive dependence on chemicals has increased production costs while reducing soil health and long-term sustainability.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to focus on:

Soil health and organic matter management.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Integrated Disease Management (IDM).

Sustainable nutrient Management.

Scientific pepper cultivation practices.

The program will include:

Classroom learning sessions, Estate visits and field demonstrations.

Practical guidance on: Planting techniques,,Manuring practices.

Spraying schedules, Maintenance and vine management, Yield improvement.

Harvesting methods for pepper, coffee, and arecanut.

Expert Mentorship:

The sessions will be mentored by: Dr. Sunil D. Tamgale, M.Sc. (Agri), Ph.D.

An internationally recognised expert in plantation and crop management, Dr. Tamgale will guide participants along with other experienced professionals from the field.

The initiative will also focus on helping farmers understand and reduce the cost of production while improving long-term farm sustainability and profitability.

Program Details:

Tentative Training Cost: Rs 10,000 (including meals).

Participation: Limited seats only.

Program Start: This monsoon season.

If you are interested in participating, please let us know.

A registration form and further details will be shared shortly.
