In connection with the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, in all urban local bodies across the state within the stipulated timeframe, a case has been filed in the Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 6174/2023. .
In this backdrop, all bulk waste generators within Madikeri city limits, including commercial establishments, bus stands, depots, industrial units, industrial zones, hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, hostels, stadiums, sports complexes, community halls, conference halls, marriage and banquet halls, tourist destinations, housing societies and similar institutions, have been instructed to segregate solid waste into four categories before handing it over to municipal waste collection vehicles. Green waste includes kitchen waste, food waste, vegetable waste, fruit waste, flower waste, garden waste and other biodegradable waste.
Dry waste includes plastic waste, cloth waste, iron, rubber, wood waste and similar materials.
Sanitary waste includes diapers, sanitary napkins, condoms and related waste materials.
Special care waste includes paint drums and containers, medicine cans, bottles and drums, bulbs, tube lights, expired medicines, broken thermometers, old batteries, used needles, syringes, bandages and similar hazardous materials.
Authorities stated that those failing to segregate waste within municipal limits would face penalties under the Solid Waste Management and Handling Rules, 2026. Action may also be initiated to disconnect basic amenities such as water and electricity connections.
Municipal Commissioner H.R. Ramesh has appealed to the public to cooperate in the effective implementation of the Public Solid Waste Management and Handling Rules, 2026, within the jurisdiction of the Madikeri City Municipal Council.
