On the occassion of Hockey India completing 100 years
As Hockey India completd 100 years, a function was organised by Mercara Downs Golf Club (MDGC) . The legendary players of the Indian hockey were felicitated and honoured by the MDGC.
The program was organized at Mercara Downs Golf Club hall under the joint auspices of the Mercara Downs Golf Club and the Madras Cricket Club (MCC).
The centenary celebration of Indian hockey was celebrated by honouring hockey legends. Maleyanda Muthappa, Anjaparavanda Dr. B. Subbaiah. Mukkatira Thimmaiah Appiah. Baleyada Poonacha, Buttianda Changappa, Mukkatira Vinod Chinnappa, Koothanda Poonacha, Paikera Kalaiah, Maneyapanda Somaya, C.S. Poonacha, Lieutenant Colonel Baleyada K. Subramani, B.P. Govinda, Mohammed Riaz, and Padmashree Vasudevan Bhaskaran were present along with MDGC President Ichetira K Anil, Honorary Secretary Kongetira Harish Appanna, Honorary Secretary of Madras Cricket Club Niranjan Mudaliar, and Cricket Club Hockey Sports Committee President Rajeev Reddy.
Speaking on the occasion, I.K. Anil, captain of MDGC said that Madras Cricket Club is also completing its centenary. On this occasion, it is a matter of pride for the sports community that Indian hockey is also turning a century, and golfers are paying their respects to the sport of hockey by honouring the legendary hockey players of the country’s, he said.
Anil praised the hockey legends who were honoured as role models for young sportsmen and expressed the hope that their encouragement should lead to a new era in the Indian hockey scene.
Speaking on behalf of the hockey players, Lieutenant Colonel Baleyada K. Subrahmani said that it has been 50 years since Indian hockey won a gold medal and added that the young sportsmen should strive hard to win a gold medal for India. He also said that the honour bestowed by the Mercara Downs Golf Club and the Madras Cricket Club has made them even more proud of their sporting achievements.
The program was conducted by Ichetira Rohit. An exhibition hockey match was played between the teams of Mercara Downs Golf Club and Madras Cricket Club on the artificial turf field of the Sai Stadium in Madikeri.
