After inaugurating the first Tok Namme of the Academy held at Mayamudi Government Primary School ground in association with Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy (KKSA) and JCI Ponnampet, A. C Mahesh Nachaiah, president of Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy said that it is our duty to know about the use and sanctity of gun and to inform the next generation.
He also urged that it is today’s responsibility that the Kodavas should make a contractual commitment to maintain guns’s exclusive rights based on the Coorg by race and Jammaland holder forever.
Chottekamada Rajiv Bopaiah, Head of Jabboomi Charitable Trust, was the chief guest of the event speaking on the occasion, said that the Kodava speaking ethnic groups, who are faithfully maintaining the tradition and way of life from time immemorial, should protect their rights with unity.
Advocate Balyamada B. Madappa presented a paper on “Protection of Right of Kodavada Tok”. Â He said that the rights, traditions and dress practices of the indigenous Kodava people including Kodava should be legally protected in their homeland.
Kodagu is the only homeland for the Kodavas. For the claimant of Kodava, traditions are the identity of this land and it is commendable that the Kodavas have maintained their identity wherever they were. Kodava people have their own culture and traditions, he said. The right of gun to the giver seems to have come from time immemorial. He said that Kovi’s right to be available as a part of discipline and etiquette along with the courage of Kodavas is a part of the culture and should be protected by making it legalised
