Dr Anil Dhawan, designated officer, Kodagu district’s Food Safety Authority, has written to the Kerala Food Safety Authority Commissioner, seeking closer monitoring of food items being sent to Kodagu.

The reports of harmful food items being brought to Kodagu from Kerala prompted the Food Safety and Standards Authority to initiate measures to address the issue.

The authorities sent a total of 90 food packages from Virajpet and its surrounding areas to the laboratory for testing. Among these, 31 items were found to contain harmful substances. Snacks such as ‘chakkuli’ and sweets were among the items tested, with fungi found in ‘parota’.

Several food packages lacked the manufacturer’s address.

Anil Dhawan said that the tested food items contain harmful substances and added thatconsuming these over a long period of time could lead to health issues.
