Akhila Kodava Samaja & Paadi Sri Igguthappa Baktha Jana Sangha’s President Pardanda Subramani Kaverappa offered prayers for Rains and bountiful Crops for Kodagu at 5:45 in the morning yesterday at Sri Igguthappa Temple. He was accompanied by Kodavas of the Bhaktha Jana Sangha.

He wisely commented that:
as the custodians of the land, it is imperative for Kodavas to take regreening measures by planting more native species of trees on our lands, conserving water, undertaking paddy cultivation and similar measures to improve the rapidly depleting water table of Kodagu. The stark exposure of the Rocky river bed at Dubare is a grim reminder of the problem we face.

It is well established that trees help control climate change through evapotranspiration – a process where water is drawn up by the roots and evaporates from the leaves. The surrounding air cools as the water transforms to water. A single tree can transpire 11,000 gallons of water into the atmosphere per year.

We have a responsibility to preserve our beloved land for future generations by following the simple yet wise customs that our ancestors followed to preserve Nature. It is disturbing to see the reduction in the size of our most dense biospheres in the form of Devarakads that have got reduced over the years. It is our collective responsibility as Kodavas to preserve and provide leadership in the rejuvenation of the green landscape that we inherited.
