The new GST policy recently announced by the central government is conducive to the development of the country. The removal of the 12% and 28% tax slabs and the retention of only the 5% and 18% slabs is a welcome step, said Kodagu District BJP President Napanda Ravi Kalappa.

In a press release, he stated that the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown concern for the people by reducing the four-tier GST structure to two slabs. He expressed confidence that this reform would lower the prices of many items and strengthen the economic condition of the poor and middle-class.

He pointed out that many essential and life-saving medicines, personal insurance, cancer treatment and health-related stationery items will now come under the zero-tax bracket.

Ravi Kalappa added that the central government has made a significant contribution to the progress of farmers by reducing tax on fertilizers, agricultural machinery, tractors, sprinklers and equipment related to sprinkler irrigation from 12% to 5%.

The tax on house construction materials such as cement, iron, bricks, tiles and paint has also been reduced, which he said will help fulfill the dream of home ownership for many poor and middle-class families.

Complete tax exemption for insured citizens will benefit a large number of people. He described the reform as the beginning of a major economic revolution that will strengthen India’s global standing.

Ravi criticized the Congress-led state government for failing to reduce the cesses and high state taxes, remarking that it has only focused on criticizing the GST policy instead of easing the burden on the people.
