Renowned translator Kuvari Deepa Bhasti was felicitated in Madikeri by the Kodagu Journalists’ Association, with support from 51 organizations, for winning the Booker Prize for her English translation Heart Lamp (originally EdeyaHanate by Banu Mushtaq). The civic event celebrated her contribution to globalizing Kannada literature.
Inaugurated by MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda, the event featured praise for Deepa’s literary impact, especially her role in reviving interest in reading among youth. Leaders, including Suja Kushalappa and Kalavathi, highlighted how her achievement put Kodagu’s literary talent on the global map.
Deepa emphasized the artistic complexity of translation and its importance in cultural exchange. Leaders of literary bodies lauded her work as a milestone for Kannada and Indian literature.
The event marked the first time such a wide cross-section of Kodagu’s civil society – from political parties and cultural groups to medical and community organizations – came together to honor a literary figure.
