MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda performed the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a new, well-equipped building at the site of the old Cauvery Kalakshetra (Town Hall) in the municipal premises.
The project includes the construction of a two-level parking facility and a modern auditorium with a seating capacity of around 450-500 people.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Gowda stated that the existing structure, built in 1953, would be demolished to make way for a new facility under the Chief Minister’s Amrutha Nagarothana Yojana at an estimated cost of ?9.50 crore. He noted that while the old Town Hall holds historical significance, redevelopment is necessary to meet present-day needs.
He recalled that earlier, Dasara celebrations were held at Cauvery Kalakshetra before being shifted to Gandhi Maidan. With increasing tourist inflow, especially to Raja Seat, and rising vehicular traffic during weekends, the need for enhanced parking infrastructure has become critical.
The proposed facility will include parking space for approximately 150 cars and 100 two-wheelers, along with modern amenities such as separate restrooms for men and women, a security room, and commercial outlets.
The MLA emphasised that development initiatives would be carried out in a non-partisan and inclusive manner, with collective cooperation. He also stressed the importance of ensuring quality construction, particularly in view of the region’s heavy rainfall.
He further stated that efforts would be made to upgrade the existing municipal building in the future.
Legislative Council Member M.P. Suja Kushalappa highlighted the need to improve basic infrastructure such as parking and traffic management, given the large influx of tourists to Kodagu. He described the project as a positive step towards urban development.
Former Minister M.P. Appachchu Ranjan recalled that the foundation stone for the project had been laid earlier during the tenure of the previous government, and expressed hope that the remaining funds would be released promptly to complete the project.
Former Municipal President M.C. Nanaiah shared his association with the Town Hall, recalling its construction during the period when Kodagu was a separate state and his personal experiences connected to the venue.
Several dignitaries, including elected representatives, officials, and members of various organisations, were present.
Municipal Commissioner H.R. Ramesh explained that the new structure will include basement parking for around 200 vehicles, office space, commercial units, and a modern auditorium with a stage and green room.
