A new insurance facility for members of the Kodagu District Working Journalists Association was launched by Cheranda Kishan Madappa, President of Republic TV Network and Head International Business Institute.

After lighting the lamp and distributing insurance cards at the programme held at Patrika Bhavan, Kishan Madappa emphasised that journalists, who tirelessly serve society, must prioritise their health. He promised personal support whenever journalists face hardships.

Karnataka Wildlife Board Member Meriyanda Sanket Poovaiah, the chief guest, said that successive governments have neglected the press – the fourth pillar of democracy. He stressed that governments must take responsibility for the security and well-being of journalists.

He further stated that when governments fail, the media plays a crucial role in bringing these issues before the public. Today, people have grown disillusioned with the executive and legislative branches, and place trust mainly in the press and judiciary. Journalists work in challenging conditions and often risk their lives, yet they lack adequate protection, he lamented. He also said the Information and Publicity Department should not be limited to distributing advertisements; instead, a safe and open environment must be created for journalists. A commission should be formed for this purpose. Many journalists fear legal action for reporting system failures; therefore, new laws are needed to protect them. He urged political parties to give journalists representation in the Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha.

Karnataka Working Journalists Association Vice President Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa said that insurance coverage empowers journalists to work without fear. He stressed that quality journalism is essential and that society continues to trust the media.Association Director Savita Rai said journalists across the state face numerous challenges, and this insurance facility offers much-needed security.

District Working Journalists Association President Bacharaniyanda Anu Cariappa, delivering the introductory address, said many journalists in the district face financial hardships and the association is able to offer only up to Rs 10,000 during medical emergencies. Hence, the decision to provide insurance coverage was taken. Through the Post Office, annual insurance worth Rs 550 has been provided. The scheme offers Rs 10 lakh in case of accidental death or disability and up to Rs 1 lakh for medical treatment.

Postal Department Branch Manager Babin and Officer Ashok provided details about the insurance scheme.

Cheranda Kishan Madappa, who extended financial support for implementing the insurance facility, was felicitated on the occasion. Insurance cards were distributed to journalists from various parts of the district.

Kudekallu Ganesh offered prayers, General Secretary H.J. Rakesh welcomed the gathering, Treasurer Sunil Ponnetti narrated the proceedings, Director Prabhudev delivered the vote of thanks, and Director G.R. Prajwal introduced the guests.
