“An understanding of economics and public discussions are the foundations of a strong democracy. In-depth study, logical thinking and honest ideas have the power to inspire social and economic change,” said Prof. Suresh M., Registrar and Controller of Examinations of Kodagu University.
He was speaking after inaugurating a district-level economics elocution competition organised at Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College in association with the Old Students’ Association to commemorate the 60th death anniversary of renowned economist A.D. Shroff. The competition was organised to honour Shroff’s memory and celebrate the power of speech, thought and freedom of expression. Addressing the students, Suresh said public speaking was not merely about pronouncing words or modulating one’s voice, but about expressing ideas clearly and confidently.
Programme coordinator and Head of the Economics Department Prof. E. Thippeswamy, in his introductory remarks, recalled Shroff’s contributions to India’s economic, industrial and commercial policies.
He said various programmes, including elocution and essay competitions, were being organised across the country to commemorate Shroff and enhance students’ understanding of economics. Chief guest Aichanda Rashmi Medappa, writer and director of the FMC College Old Students’ Association, said participation in such competitions would help students build confidence, broaden their knowledge and shape their futures. She added that these events contributed to the development of students’ skills.
Presiding over the programme, college principal Major Prof. B. Raghava said economics was not limited to the study of statistics, demand and supply, inflation, GDP or economic policies. At its core, economics was concerned with human welfare, social justice and sustainable development.
He said such competitions helped nurture capable professionals, critical thinkers, ethical citizens and responsible young leaders.
The district-level competition was judged by Dr. B.H. Talwar, Associate Professor in the Hindi Department; H.R. Ramesh, Assistant Professor in the English Department; and Harshitha Shetty, TV1 reporter.
They guided students on presenting their subjects effectively, modulating their voices, engaging audiences through ideas and communicating the thoughts and contributions of A.D. Shroff.
