Sri Mahant Swamiji of KodlipeteKallumath opined that the implementation of the principles and ideals of the country’s cultural leader Basavanna would foster peace, tolerance, and coexistence in society.

He was speaking at the Sri JagajyotiBasaveshwara Jayanti programmeorganised at Gandhi Bhavan in the city on Monday by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, and the Kannada and Culture Department.

Expressing concern over contemporary societal conduct, Swamiji observed that very few individuals today practice what they preach. He noted that both voters and those in governance often fail to act in accordance with their words.   Highlighting the essence of Kayaka (dignity of labour), Swamiji remarked that Basava Jayanti should be observed through meaningful work rather than as a mere holiday. “True homage to Basavanna lies in practicing Kayaka, not in declaring a holiday,” he asserted.

He further emphasized that individuals must strive to work and earn their livelihood independently rather than depend on others, especially after reaching maturity. Stressing the importance of character, he called upon people to cultivate good manners and speech and to follow the guidance and life message of Basavanna.

Swamiji recalled that Basavanna, in the 12th century, embraced all sections of society, initiated social reforms, and worked towards building an egalitarian society. However, he expressed concern that caste divisions persist even today, often reflected in exclusive community-based programmes.

Illustrating philosophical insights through examples such as silkworms and blanket worms, Swamiji highlighted the inevitability of progression in life.

He also drew parallels between Basavanna’s emphasis on Kayaka and service and the contributions of Sri Shivakumara Swamiji in the modern era, particularly in the field of education. “In today’s digital age, children should be taught Vachanas instead of being absorbed in mobile phones. Life becomes meaningful when one adopts the principles of Basava Vachanas,” he said.

Additional District Collector R. Aishwarya stated that Basavanna’s thoughts and ideals are timeless and universally relevant. She described JagajyotiBasaveshwara as a global cultural leader and a Kayakayogi who worked tirelessly for social equality.

She noted that through the AnubhavaMantapa, Basavanna advocated equality, simplicity, and inclusivity, including for women. He emphasized inner devotion and sincerity over outward display.

Kodagu University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ashok Sangappa Alura highlighted Basaveshwara’s efforts in establishing an egalitarian society through the principles of Kayaka and Dasoha. He stressed the need to understand Basava Dharma and the legacy of the Sharanas, noting that Basavanna’s vision was to build a just and inclusive society.

He further stated that Basavanna opposed inequality and untouchability and propagated the message that compassion is the foundation of religion and knowledge is the true teacher. Through the Anubhava Mantapa, Basavanna ensured equal opportunities, including through practices such as Lingadeeksha and inter-community marriages.

H.V. Shivappa, District President of the All India Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha, also addressed the gathering.

Municipal Council President P. Kalavathi, Tahsildar Sridhar, Mahasabha District General Secretary T.S. Sambhasivayya, Taluk Presidents Rudraprasanna and Madhusudan, Sharan Sahitya Parishad District President K.S. Murthy, and former Kannada Sahitya Parishad presidents Lokesh Sagar, Dr. Ravikiran, Dr. Ravi Shankar, Venkatesa, Bhaskar, and others were present.

Assistant Director of the Kannada and Culture Department Kumar welcomed the gathering, while Manjur Manjunath compered the programme. Teachers Basavaraju and B.C. Shankrayya rendered the national song, Manju Bhargavi presented a Vachana recital, and K.S. Murthy delivered the vote of thanks.

Prior to the programme, a procession was held from the city fort premises to Gandhi Bhavan. Deputy Divisional Officer Nitin Chakki garlanded the portrait of Jagajyoti Basaveshwara and flagged off the procession. Dollu Kunita and Pooja Kunita troupes participated, adding cultural vibrancy to the event.
