MLA A.S. Ponnanna has urged the Central Government to clarify the steps taken and funds allocated to address human-elephant conflict in Kodagu.

Speaking at a press conference, he criticised the BJP for politicising recent deaths caused by elephant attacks and called for a scientific and united approach to resolve the issue.

He cited data on fatalities over recent years and questioned the actions taken during previous administrations.

He emphasised that projects such as Project Elephant fall under central jurisdiction and sought transparency on funds allocated to Karnataka.

Ponnanna also expressed concern over the disparity in central assistance to neighbouring states like Kerala.

He said that 139.83 km of railway barricades have already been constructed in the district, with an additional 150 km pending, requiring Rs. 290 crore. Steps have also been taken to expand fencing in key regions.

A total of 32 task forces and rapid response teams have been deployed, supported by vehicles and other infrastructure, to manage the conflict.
