Mysuru – Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar has welcomed the Central Government’s decision to extend the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) till December 2028 with a renewed focus on reforms in the rural drinking water supply sector.
In a press release, the MP stated that the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal of the Ministry of Jal Shakti to restructure and expand the scheme under JJM 2.0 to ensure sustainable piped drinking water supply in rural areas.
He noted that the mission will now focus not only on infrastructure development but also on service delivery, ensuring that rural households receive reliable drinking water supply.
The MP said he would soon convene a meeting with concerned officials to formulate an action plan for effective implementation of the scheme in the constituency.
Across the country, 19.36 crore rural households have been identified for tap water connections. As of now, about 15.80 crore households (81.61%) have been provided connections.
According to SBI Research, the Jal Jeevan Mission has relieved nearly nine crore women from the daily task of fetching water, enabling them to participate more actively in economic activities.
Under JJM 2.0, the goal is to ensure tap water connections to all rural households by December 2028, enabling all Gram Panchayats to achieve ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certification.
The revamped mission has an allocation of ?8.69 lakh crore, with ?3.59 lakh crore as Central assistance.
A national digital framework called “Sujalam Bharat” will also be developed to digitally map water supply systems from source to household tap connections, ensuring transparency and accountability through community participation.
