The Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC) presented its 2026-27 budget of Rs 51.87 crore during a meeting held on Wednesday.
The budget estimates a surplus of Rs 1.71 crore, with total expected income of Rs51.87 crore, including an opening balance of Rs 13.31 crore and projected revenue of Rs 38.57 crore. Estimated expenditure stands at Rs 50.17 crore.
The meeting witnessed heated exchanges between BJP and SDPI members regarding the presentation of the budget.

Vice President Mahesh Jaini initially attempted to present the budget, but SDPI members objected and demanded that President P. Kalavathi present it herself. After she read the opening lines due to ill health, the Vice President presented the detailed budget.
Key Revenue Sources :
Revenue is expected from various grants including:
- SFC salary grant – Rs 500 lakh
- SFC electricity grant – Rs 422 lakh
- 15th Finance Commission grant – Rs 332 lakh
- Solid waste management grant – Rs 50 lakh
- Income will also be generated through property tax, business licence fees, water supply charges, shop rents and market fees.
Major Development Works |
Budget allocations include:
- Rs 150 lakh for construction of commercial shops
- Rs 375 lakh for roads, drains and retaining walls
- Rs 200 lakh for ward development
- Rs 100 lakh for sanitation vehicles
- Rs 65 lakh for stormwater drains and bridges
- Rs 100 lakh for lake development
Opposition members Amin Mohisin and M.K. Mansoor Ali criticised the budget and demanded detailed information about returned grants.
Vice President Mahesh Jaini assured that a special meeting would be convened to discuss the budget in detail.
