Kembatti Janapada Namme
Separately, a delegation of the indigenous Kembatti community submitted a memorandum to Kodava Sahitya Academy President Ajjinikanda C. Mahesh Nachaiah in Virajpet, seeking support for organizing the ‘KembattiJanapada Namme’ folk festival for the first time.
Community leaders including Billarikuttada Prabhu Ayyappa, Balekuttada Uday Madappa, Peggoli Dinesh, Chavarekuttada Jeevan, Koparekuttada Sagar Povanna, Chimmikuttada Nitesh and others were present.

Kodavas exhibited their courage to include all other ethnic communities including kembattis in all their cultural, social and religious ceremonies, who were settled down in “Kodavu Desha” in early Vedic period. In ancient times, kembattis served as helping hand for Kodava land owners for their cultivation of paddy fields. They are the key drummers (vaalaaga kaara ) too for all Kodava ceremonies and festivals. Kodavas encouraged them, respected them by providing all civic amenities. Later Marangis (Mysore region) and Kukka (Mangalore region) dominated as drummers as the population of Kembattis is reduced due to frequent war and infant mortality/health related problems. But Kodavas provided them shelter and served them-with the same food they eat in Kodava homes. These kembatti drummers are always in the front during all religious ceremonies. Hence Kodavas culture is inclusive in societal activities, and never ever practiced or followed the act of untouchability (Verna bhedha Neethi especially followed by upper class Hindus ) which was highly practised in society, during later Vedic periods.
Kodavas settlement in Cauvery valley is not known to any one (Except for God) including Aryans and Dravidians who migrated to southern region much later. Due to lack of proper research papers , evidences and dominance of other communities influence, Kodavas lived in “kooduva male valleys”without any interaction with other civilisation during ancient times.
In later period, the story was created by few Sankrit pundits who wrote Cauvery purana story to show Kodavas as shudras.
Now I request our modern historians to check original “Skanda Purana” where in Cauvery puraana chapters are not included, which is a clear evidence of its fake origin or later addition story as upa-purana.
Only two enthusiastic noble scholars disagreed this “created Story “ are , Robert Cole and Major General (Retd) Codanda K Karumbayya.
The above mentioned gentlemen who did some thorough research and boldly opined that, “chandraverma & Theerthodbhava Story” is fabricated and biased to highlight Kodavas origin as “Chandraverma -Shudra Children Story” is far away from truth.
When I was doing thorough search of subject matter and while referring various research papers( Literature Review), I came across some interesting facts narrated by our proud Warrior Kodava Major General Codanda K Karumbaya whose bold statements made in the book -“Are Kodavas are Hindus?” published in year 2018 by one of the most popular Journalists from Kodava Nadu Mr Palanganda T Bopanna who contributed many literary works highlighting Kodava tradition and culture.
In PT Bopanna’s Book , Major General Karumbaiah boldly highlighted (refer page number 58 & 62 ) that chandraverma-Cauvery purana story is nothing but a fabricated story and the same was mentioned as “Therrthodbhava is due to pressure difference in water bodies after mansoon“ by Robert Cole during British rule.
As I did some research, I found that the very popular name “Cauvery” itself is copied version of tributaries of Narmada and Agasthya Lopamudra stories exist in mythical old 18 Puranas . Cauvery river was mentioned in south flowing as “Marudwaja” as our ancient Kodava people called it as “Thayoor Pole” which was in our language “Avva Paaje Kodava Thakk” silently uttered by our grandfathers-mothers/great grandfathers-mothers, now completely forgotten by modern generation. The state of mind of Kodavas never changed due to
the influence of modern fabricated story stood strong in the society and this false story was recorded in all government statutory/legal gazetteer documents. Perhaps this puranic story and Tippu’s devatiparambu capture Stories are the major blunders in the history of mankind. Society blindly followed these scripts written by pundits in Sanskrit (not understood by Kodavas).
Later Edurkula Shankaranarayana Bhatta added feather and colourful image while translating into Kannada version. All these later stage developments created a wonderful fake story. Today tge event is glorified as Theerthodbhava making it political mela with some huge outlay for conducting this Megha mela draining our Tax money.
Historically speaking, many sages chose western ghats for their penance and spent their life in these Cauvery valley region including Baganda Rhushi is also true.
Thala Cauvery is indeed the birth place of river “Thayoor Pole” is true, but stories created by pundits is not true. One strong evidence I found when I did a thorough literature review was there’s no Brahmagiri hill near Bhaghamandala, only Pushpa Giri, vindya Giri and Gajaraja Giri are the enchanted hills stretches till thadiyanda mol, Indrakeela(Baitor) and the last hill named Brahmagiri hills near irpu temple, where Laxmana theertha river originated.
Hence, Brahmagiri name duplicated by pundits again in Cauvery Purana near Bhagamandala is totally untrue.
The reason for writing all these topics is to enumerate my claim
as follows:
“Kembattis” are our paddy cultivation partners, their origin is as old as Kodavas civilisation and their existence is evidenceed during “ Cauvery Valley civilisation “.
It’s vary sad and unfortunate that many of our children are again and getting biased by
false stories published as Historical Books by mid-age era pundits from both old mysore and Tanjavur. They deliberately added Cauvery Purana to original mythical Skanda Purana as 15th chapter to show Kodavas as Shudras. It’s a challenge to all young Kodava researchers, historians and archaeologists to explore further on Kodavas existence before Dravidans settlements.
Am concluding my comment with this old saying “History is like a natural stream of river water flowing through generations with many tributaries with pure water, it remains holy as long as someone deliberately add false information to make it pollute”.
