Heavy rains and wind cause damages in Kodagu

Incessant rains pouring across Kodagu district, disrupting life in rural areas. Due to heavy rain and wind more than 500 electric poles have fallen, many houses have been damaged due to falling of trees.

The fast wind and rain is causing heavy damages through out the district. Continuous rains are coming in Talakaveri and Bhagamandala areas, and Triveni Sangama was filled, covering the roads with water. This is the first time in recent years that Triveni Sangama has filled in the month of May. There has been disruption to vehicle traffic on the Napoklu and Madikeri roads. Pooja rituals such as offering of Pinda have also been disrupted.

Madikeri and Virajpet taluks are witnessing heavy rains accompanied by wind, which has uprooted dozens of trees and hundreds of electric poles. Rivers and streams are overflowing in rural areas, power supply has been disrupted, making normal life difficult. If the wind and heavy rain continue like this, there is a fear among the villagers that there may be danger in high and low-lying areas.

Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply  Corporation (CESC) Executive Engineer M. Ramachandra announced that more than 200 electric poles have fallen in the Madikeri division due to wind and rain. Power men, gangmen and branch officers are carrying out evacuation operations with the cooperation of the public. Efforts are being made to restore power supply to the consumers, at the earliest, he noted.

A tree fell on the house of K.K. Majeed in Kallubane, RG village, Virajpet taluk, causing partial damage. A coconut tree fell on the house of Beeran, a resident of Valnur-Tyagathtur village in Kushalnagar taluk, causing damage. But fortunately, there was no danger to those in the house. The main roads of Virajpet town were flooded, disrupting business and public life. Roads in Madikeri town were also flooded, causing problems. Water entered the Cauvery Hall, disrupting a wedding ceremony.

A huge tree fell near Katakeri on the Madikeri-Sampaje highway, halting vehicle traffic. Later, a clearance operation was carried out. Trees have also fallen on the road in Siddapur, Chettalli, Somwarpet, Kushalanara, Napoklu, and Bettageri areas.

A record 8 inches of rain has fallen in Talakaveri-Bhagamandala . The rainfall is expected to increase for the next three days and a red alert has been declared across Kodagu district. Private schools in the district, which were supposed to start from May 26, are now planning to commence from May 29 due to  heavy rain.
