On this auspicious month of Edamyaar, with the rumbling of thunder, flashes of lightning, and nurturing rainfall, I saw a farmer ploughing his land.
On the main seed planting _Yaka – (paddy field), I saw a middle aged Kodava ploughing earnestly and symbolically with a slightly bent back.
For Pommale Kodagu and for all Kodavas and Bashikas – this is our Kodava New Year – Greetings and best wishes to all on Edamyaar Ondh best.

CLN spoke to the President Akhila Kodava Samaja. Brief excerpts follow:
Edamyaar Ondh is celebrated as the New Year in Kodagu and is considered auspicious across the country. It is celebrated as a festive occasion to bring prosperity, good health and immense happiness in many places as Baisakhi, Puthandu, Vishu, Pohela Baisakh, Bohag Bihu and Pana Sankranthi. Coincidentally these are mostly areas associated with rice cultivation.
Paradanda Subramani Kaveriapppa:
“In the backdrop of the everlasting memory of the great impact of the Kodavaame Balo Nadp, we usher in the auspicious New Year. It is important to remind ourselves that no occasion or prayer is complete without a little bit of rice 🌾 in a Kodava household. It is imperative that we must cultivate paddy, even a small quantity, in our paddy fields, without which celebration of Puthari and Kailpodh will be irrelevant ”.
“It is also an important time to remember that our customs and rituals even at our local temples is conducted in an “inclusive” manner under the time tested Thakkame system which not only encompasses Kodavas but all all other communities that have embraced the Kodava way of life. This age old practice is an essential ingredient contributing to Peace and Cultural Harmony.”
“On this auspicious occasion, we must celebrate our unique Kodavaame – Kodava way of Life that promotes Brotherhood, Peace, Harmonius co-existence with a renewed energy to cultivate Paddy.”
CLN wishes all its extended readers prosperity, good health and let the spirit of the New Year fill your lives with Joy and Renewed Energy to make our land Pommale Kodagu, as we once knew it to be!!
It is interesting to see so much overlap in functions between Tulunad and Kodagu!
On this day we plough the field and at least spread a handful of seeds in the corner of the field. This is symbolic and the meaning is that if we do it today we can start agriculture activity any day in the coming months depending on rain.
This is called as Pundi Bittu (Handful of seeds – for planting).
Today seems to be a very auspicious day and interesting to note that most rice growing communities celebrate this festival – of course for different reasons – but Prosperity, Good Health and Joy for ALL is a common thread.
The clarion call for cultivating our paddy fields is very important. The alarming fall of the water table due to our paddy fields remaining fallow is of serious environmental concern.
Also, *if we don’t grow paddy, what right do we have to celebrate Puthari?*
Cultivation of paddy was core to our existence before coffee plantations happened. Our revered ancestors cleared the jungles to create paddy fields. We must make evey effort to re-establish the practice of paddy cultivation. 🙏🏼
This article beautifully captures the cultural richness and deep-rooted values of the Kodava way of life. It’s a wonderful reminder of the importance of tradition, community, and harmony. May this Edamyaar Ondh inspire us all to cherish our heritage and work towards a more united and prosperous Kodagu. Wishing everyone a joyful and meaningful New Year!”
