The Martyrs’ Day was celebrated in Madikeri recently by the District Administration, Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC), Kannada and Culture Department and Sarvodaya Committee.
Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes,which was placed in the district treasury office, was taken
in procession with police band from Mangerira Muthanna circle and General K.S. Thimayya circle andin the main road of Madikeri and placed near the Gandhi Mantappa and paid tribute to with police honours. Later floral tributeswere offeredfor the portrait of Mahatma Gandhiji.
Meanwhile, the police reserve sub -inspector Hanumantha Koujalagi and his team paidrespects by firing three rounds of gun shots in air and a minute’s silence was observed. The police team led by Venkatesh sang the NationalAnthem.
Then there was the prayer of Sarvadharma, and Gandhiji’s favourite bhajana vocals were performed by St. Michael’s School, Bharat Seva Dal and Crescent School Guides. The messages from Bhagavad Gita were read by Santosh Bhat, messages from Bible by Reverend Father Deepak, and the messages from Quran was read by Isaac Ahmed.
Speaking on the occasion, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Venkat Raja informed that Mahatma Gandhi used to tell that, “My life is my message”. In this regard, everyone’s should follow the principals of Mahatma Gandhiji.
Peace, unity, fraternity, equality, these are Gandhiji’s philosophical messages and should strive to shape Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals in life.
The Gandhi Bhavan was built in Madikeri and various activities are underway. The continued work of the Gandhi Memorial Park is expected to begin soon. In this regard, Gandhiji’s messages will be spread everywhere in Madikeri, DC added.
Speaking on the occasion District Superintendent of Police (SP) K. Ramarajan said that the message of Mahatma Gandhiji should be remembered for all time and in this regard, Gandhiji’s messages must reach everyone.
Everyone should respect another. No one should cause unrest. SP felt that Gandhiji was honoured if we maintained peace and harmony in the society.
Speaking on the occasion Additional Deputy Commissioner R. Aishwarya said that Mahatma Gandhi is a great man of the century. Gandhiji has fought for equality and independence. He also emphasized environmental cleanliness and she also said that Gandhi has made his own contribution to the development of society.
TP Ramesh, former chairman of the Sarvodaya Committee, said that after the construction of the Gandhi Memorial Park, the ashes will be kept at the Memorial Park will be preserved with full respect.
