The monsoons in Kodagu makes this a magical misty landscape where dry water beds of streams come to life all over the land the natives call Pommale Kodagu.
While the larger iconic waterfalls – Abbi, Irupu, Chelavara predictably get most of the visitors, the mystical smaller ones are excitingly beautiful with a quiet ambience in tranquil surroundings. Devaragundi, Kote Abbi Falls, Abbyala Falls and many more are a spectacle to see and enjoy especially during the monsoons.
One of the most attractive waterfall created by a tributary of river Kaveri; Chelavara is located in Cheyyandane village. It is in its prime during the monsoons having a 150 ft drop over a rock, which with some imagination is said to resemble the shape of a tortoise.
Unfortunately the pool at the bottom of the falls has a deep and unpredictable rocky surface making it unsafe for swimming.
Arguably the most accessed waterfall due to its proximity from Madikeri. This relatively small stream swells to an impressive waterfall that drops for about 70 ft over wide rocks creating a spectacular view.
Access to Abbi Falls is through private coffee plantations. The hanging bridge is an attraction that no other waterfall provides in Kodagu. Bathing or swimming in Abbi Falls is not allowed.
The Irupu Falls is a fresh water cascade located in Kutta. It is located inside Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a stream/tributary of Lakshmana-Theertha river and considered a sacred place.
The water flows down a steep gradient from about 60m height and finally joins the river Kaveri. At present, the entry has been curbed due to the high velocity of the flowing water. Swimming and swimming are not allowed .
The great attraction of this location are the very attractive walking trails that can be selectively accessed when the monsoon is not at its peak.
Mallali is amongst the most beautiful waterfalls near Somwarpet in Kodagu. Monsoon is the best time to visit Mallali falls as the river dries up in summer. The water for the falls flows Mallali from Kumaradhara River and is at the foot of Pushpapagiri hills. and falls from a height of 62 metres.
The nearest village is Hanchinalli. The falls can be approached only by foot as the roads become very narrow and rugged.
Surlabbi falls is located in a very picturesque place and one can spot many small streams all along the drive from Madapur Town. The topography is similar to Irupu falls – albeit a smaller version.
An extended drive takes one to the most beautiful but over-crowded Mandalpatti – heaven-on-earth . The scenic beauty is unparalleled.
A very picturesque place and one can spot many small streams all along the drive from Madapur Town. The topography is similar to Irupu falls – albeit a smaller version.
This is a hidden gem amongst water bodies near Kushalnagar. It is a spillway shaped in a from of semi-circle water bowl and similar to a water fall, but from the dam. It is surrounded on the one side by a thick green forest and a gentle grassland on the other – making it a prefect visual treat.

OMG!!!!!! Each one more Brilliant than the other. Nature is at her best in the monsoons
Serene and graceful waterwall surrounded by picturesque landscape is an peaceful escape from the city. Coorg at its best during monsoon.
I have very fond memories of Coorg while studying at Bangalore and more recently visiting close Kodava friends.
Coorg is blessed with natural beauty, rugged and verdant landscapes. Monsoons bring the place alive and the article beautifully captures the scale and roar of the waterfalls. I know many of them are considered sacred as they all flow into the Mother river Kaveri. Many thanks for sharing these beautiful images and memories.
Monsoon and Coorg go with the mesmerizing falls cascade with an awe-inspiring force, surrounded by lush greenery and creating a symphony of sound and mist.
Yes, the beauty of Nature, waterfalls made Coorg as heaven also it is known as Scotland of India. But now a days Tourists are uncontrollable and it is creating more trouble to the nature, by the name of Tourisam roads are broadening which is causing landslide. If the Coorg remains Coorg our land will be safe and clean.
Monsooned Kodagu, Mesmerizing, Nature lovers paradise,
