K.R. Bindhu, Subject Inspector of the School Education Department, speaking at the Kittur Rani Chennamma Jayanti programme held at Gandhi Bhavan, Madikeri, recently, said that Kittur Rani Chennamma, the brave woman who fought against the British for freedom, remains a role model for all.
The programme was jointly organised by the Kodagu District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, and the Department of Kannada and Culture.
She further stated that Kittur Rani Chennamma, who had mastered swordsmanship, archery, and horse riding in her childhood, fought against the British even before the 1857 freedom struggle. Bindhu highlighted that Rani Chennamma inspired her countrymen to resist the British by refusing to pay property tax on their lands and by opposing the payment of royalties to them.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional Superintendent of Police Barike Dinesh Kumar said that Kittur Rani Chennamma’s patriotism and love for the nation were truly admirable. He added that while many changes had occurred before and after independence, everyone must respect and follow the law of the land and maintain a questioning attitude in a democratic society.
Assistant Commissioner Nitin Chakki observed that Kittur Rani Chennamma’s courage, patriotism, and adventurous spirit were exemplary and that her sacrifice should always be remembered.
Siddharaju Bellaiah, Principal of Made Maheshwar Pre-University College, noted that Kittur Rani Chennamma created awareness about freedom long before India’s independence. He advised students to lead purposeful lives and work with clear goals.
Kalavathi, President of Madikeri C M C, also spoke on the occasion, praising Kittur Rani Chennamma’s bravery and her deep concern for the welfare of her people. Teacher Rakshith, retired teacher B.C. Shankaraiah, and several others were present.
Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture Department Kumar welcomed the gathering. B.C. Shankaraiah rendered a national song, and Manajur Manjunath narrated the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.
