The article written by I K Anil, Executive Editor, Coffeeland News for the Planters Chronicle of the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Sports Meet is reproduced below:

As one of the oldest members, a past president and an active participant of UPASI Sports Club, I have had the privilege of witnessing and contributing to the remarkable journey of our esteemed association for over 4 decades. UPASI, with its rich history and commitment to the plantation community, has been a cornerstone of support and development for planters across South India. Our annual sports meet, a tradition cherished for decades, embodies the spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition. On the occasion of UPASI Sports Club turning 75 this year, I reflect on the significance of our sports meets, and my vision for fostering the next generation of sports persons

The UPASI Sports Meet: A Tradition of Excellence

The UPASI Sports Meet is more than just an event; it is a celebration of our community’s spirit and vitality. For decades, this annual gathering has brought together planters and their families, creating lasting memories and fostering friendships. As an avid golfer, I have experienced first-hand the joy and competition that the sports meets bring. Golf, with its strategic depth and technical precision, has been a highlight, drawing participants from the 3 states, who share a passion for the sport and the burning desire to win. The annual sports meet is a testament to our community’s commitment to physical well-being and camaraderie, transcending professional boundaries.

My Journey and Highlights over 4 decades

In the 70s and early 80s, UPASI golf was dominated by Bhojraj, Kuttaiah and the famous Thomas brothers – Dilip Thomas and Ajit Thomas. The record to break was Kuttaiah’s, who had won the Golf Open 5 times. In 1984, I won my first Open in UPASI after playing 36 holes against the formidable Dilip Thomas.

Thereon, the universe was kind to me and I went on to win the Open on nine occasions, which stands as the record till date. From the late 80s to the 90s we, mainly, had local challengers in V.Ramaswamy and Ramneek Singh, along with Pramod Kurian, from Coorg, who was a rising force in the golf circuit at that time.

The Sports meets would reach their crescendo with the fiercely fought Staff College (DSSC) versus UPASI golf match. This brought out the best in all the golfers as we wanted to beat them on their own turf. The Coonoor Club always played host to the best parties and fellowship events. It would be correct to say that it was our home away from home. The inter-district golf is held nowadays at the Ooty Gymkhana Golf Club, which has seen many well fought encounters between the district teams. The Sports meets at Chikmagalur, Anamallais, Coorg and Munnar had their own charm and unforgettable memories and sporting interactions.

UPASI Sports Club has had the honour of hosting international delegations and meets with Malaysia and Sri Lanka at Coonoor. I will also cherish memories of the meet we had in Sri Lanka, where I clinched the Open in my first outing at Nuwara Eliya golf course.

Engaging the Younger Generation

One of my visions for the future of UPASI Sports meets is to engage the younger generation actively. It is crucial to inspire young planters and their families across these 3 states, to participate in our activities, ensuring the continuity of our traditions and the infusion of fresh perspectives. To achieve this, we must Introduce Modern Sports Meets with the right environment.

In conclusion, UPASI Sports Club has been a pillar of strength and unity for 75 years. As we move forward, let us remain committed to our core values, while embracing change and fostering new connections. It is through such efforts that we will continue to grow and prosper, ensuring a vibrant and resilient future for the plantation community.
