The Codava National Council (CNC) launched a campaign from Talakaveri, the origin of the Cauvery River, to draw the attention of the government to various demands, including the creation of separate Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies for Kodavas.
Led by CNC President N.U. Nachappa, members offered prayers and formed a human chain, taking an oath in support of their constitutional demands.
Nachappa announced that a 48-hour day-and-night peaceful satyagraha will be held from May 12.
He stated that demands include internal reservation for Kodava women under the 33% quota, allocation of a separate code in the 2027 census, and creation of constituencies either territorially or on the model of Sikkim’s Sangha constituency.
He expressed concern over population-based delimitation, demographic changes, and declining Kodava population.
The CNC reiterated its long-standing demands including autonomy, tribal status, political representation, and recognition as indigenous people by the United Nations.
Additional demands include inclusion of Kodava Tak in the Eighth Schedule, protection of sacred sites, UNESCO recognition, restoration of heritage sites, and proper water allocation under international principles.
