The Kodagu district unit of the Vishwa Tuluva Mahasabha has welcomed the State Cabinet’s approval of a proposal to declare Tulu Karnataka’s second additional language, alongside Kannada, for administrative use. A delegation of the Kodagu unit welcomed the decision at the venue of the Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru.
The organisation said Tulu has a history spanning more than 2,000 years and is one of the major Dravidian languages. It noted the language’s growth in the educational and cultural spheres and said the Mahasabha had been urging the government for several years to recognise Tulu as a second additional language to facilitate its development. District President B.B. Aithappa Rai, District General Secretary Rajiv Lochana and District Organising Convener P.M. Ravi said the government had taken the decision after obtaining and reviewing reports from experts and officials. They welcomed the announcement of an annual grant of Rs 82 lakh for activities relating to Tulu translation, training and its use in administration.
They said the decision was expected to support the administrative use, preservation, and educational and cultural development of Tulu, and expressed gratitude to the government on behalf of the Kodagu district unit. The celebration following the Cabinet decision was attended by representatives and members of several Tulu-speaking organisations in Kodagu. Those present included Tulu Koota President B.B. Aithappa Rai, District General Secretary P.M. Ravi Mogera, Vishwa Tuluva Mahasabha Kodagu District General Secretary Rajiv Lochana, Bhantara Sangha District President Jagadish Rai, Taluk Convener Sadashiva Rai and Mahasabha Virajpet Taluk President Shabari Shetty.
