A disaster management training programme was organised at Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College, Madikeri, recently in collaboration with the college’s NCC, NSS and YRC units.
NDRF Inspector Pradeep Kumar, who was the chief guest, briefed students and volunteers on disaster management, rescue operations and basic life-saving measures.
He explained that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) undertakes rescue and relief operations across the country during natural and man-made disasters. He also noted that NDRF personnel have participated in international rescue operations when required and have saved numerous lives during major disasters. Â Â Pradeep Kumar stressed that members of the local community are often the first to reach the scene of a disaster. Therefore, he said, it was essential for people to have basic knowledge of disaster management, first aid and life-saving techniques. Such training, he added, enables individuals to assist the injured and help save lives until professional rescue teams arrive.
He encouraged students and volunteers to undergo appropriate training and cooperate with the NDRF and other rescue agencies during emergencies. NDRF Rescue Commander Nagaraju A.P. conducted detailed training sessions on disaster management and rescue operations. The NDRF team used photographs and examples from actual rescue missions to explain operations carried out during floods, landslides, earthquakes, building collapses and other emergencies.
Through accounts of real-life disaster situations, the trainers explained how emergencies should be handled, the precautions to be taken and common mistakes that should be avoided.
The training covered several important aspects of disaster response, including remaining calm, assessing the situation, ensuring personal safety, assisting injured persons where possible and immediately alerting professional rescue teams.
The trainers also highlighted the importance of presence of mind, courage, discipline, teamwork and humanity during disaster situations. Students and volunteers were given practical guidance on responding to different emergencies.
The programme was presided over by college Principal Major Prof. Raghava B. In his presidential address, he said natural and man-made disasters could occur without warning and stressed the importance of being prepared to deal with critical, life-threatening situations.
He urged students to acquire life-saving skills through such training and use them to serve society and the nation by responding courageously during emergencies.  Dr. Shailashree K. and Alok K. Bijai, Programme Officers of the NSS and YRC units, college faculty members and NDRF personnel were present.
NCC, NSS and YRC volunteers of the college actively participated in the programme. The event began with a prayer by Bhuvana and her team, followed by a welcome address by NCC Cadet Sandesh. NSS volunteer Megha proposed the vote of thanks, while Kavana, a third-year B.Com student, compered the programme.
NDRF personnel also demonstrated life-saving equipment and provided practical instruction in first aid and CPR, including measures to be followed during accidents, fire incidents and other emergencies.
