National Girl Child Day for the academic year 2025-26 was celebrated at the high school section of the Government Pre-University College, Madikeri, under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.
The programme was organized jointly by the Kodagu District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Legal Services Authority, Education Department, and the Women and Child Development Department.
The programme was inaugurated by Kodagu District Legal Services Authority Member Secretary and Senior Civil Judge Shubha, who said that January 24 is observed as National Girl Child Day to highlight the importance of girls in society. She noted that historically, girls were denied respect and equal opportunities. Despite laws and awareness campaigns, violence against girls continues, she said, emphasizing that change must begin with individual attitudes.
Senior Civil Judge Shubha urged girls to overcome feelings of inferiority, use time wisely, avoid excessive mobile phone usage, and focus on education to achieve their goals. Â Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department Prasanna Kumar advised students to utilize available opportunities to build a bright future and informed them about departmental facilities, helplines, and compulsory education provisions.

Sumathi from the District Children’s Special Police Unit emphasized the importance of educating every girl child to eliminate gender inequality and encouraged students to seek help through helplines when needed.
A quiz competition was organized for students, and prizes were distributed. Keshini welcomed the gathering, Joyappa compered the programme and delivered the vote of thanks. Head teacher Sashikala, departmental staff, and students were present.
