During the District Road Safety Committee meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Madikeri, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja informed that the four-lane road work from Srirangapatna to Basavanahalli near Guddehosur has begun. He cautioned that vehicular movement is expected to increase significantly from Basavanahalli to Sampaje in the coming days.
He instructed engineers to take immediate measures to ensure road safety on this stretch-construction of road humps, zebra crossings, identification of black spots, and installation of signboards at bends.
Kodagu Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan said more attention must be given to road safety from Kushalnagar to Sampaje. He stressed the need for adequate streetlighting, pruning roadside branches obstructing vehicular movement, and construction of signboards and humps.
The SP noted that the Madikeri-Boikeri stretch is accident-prone due to excessive curves and recommended necessary safety measures. He also emphasised installing signboards on highways and marking parking spaces in Gonikoppa and Murnadu.
Assistant Executive Engineer Girish from the Highways Department said the Srirangapatna-Basavanahalli highway work is expected to be completed within two years. He added that precautionary measures are being taken to reduce accidents on the Kushalnagar-Sampaje stretch.
Deputy Conservator of Forests Abhishek suggested that details of the road work project be shared with the Forest Department during DPR preparation.
PWD Executive Engineer Ibrahim said road safety within the department’s jurisdiction is being closely monitored.
ZP Executive Engineer Nayak, Regional Transport Officer Satish, Police Officer Medappa, PWD Assistant Executive Engineer Sathish (Virajpet), and others attended the meeting.
