COPS hosted World Space Week celebrations

Coorg Public School and Pre-University, Gonikoppal,  recently celebrated World Space Week on October 8, 2025. The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest Dr. Somanna Kollimada, a distinguished alumnus and scientist, along with dignitaries including Professor M D  Nanjunda, Founder Principal and Senior Trust Member, KAEC;  K Dhanya Subbaiah, President, KAEC; M T Machaiah, Treasurer, KAEC; Dr. Ramachandran M, Principal, Coorg Public School;  Sanjeev Kumar K S,  Rajeshwari, senior scientists from ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre and  Vijayalakshmi S, Vice Principal.

The Treasurer of the School Trust  M T Machaiah welcomed the gathering.  The Chief Guest was introduced by  Sanchita Chengappa, Academic Coordinator. Dr. Kollimada Somanna, in his speech emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary subjects and encouraged the students to make intense preparation for competitive exams.  Sanjeev Kumar K S and Rajeshwari delivered insightful talks on space exploration.

The opening ceremony was concluded by a Vote of  Thanks by  Veda Bopanna, Vice Principal.

The highlight was the inauguration of the Science Center, ‘Jijnasa’, curated by Vagartha with the theme “Dispel error, discover truth,” under  Prajna’s mentorship. Students showcased impressive experiments featuring optical devices, lateral shift, inertia of rest, Fleming’s right-hand rule and Eddy Currents.

Participants from more than 25 schools took part in quiz, elocution and painting competitions, demonstrating creativity, knowledge and public speaking skills. Interaction with ISRO scientists provided valuable insights, inspiring students to pursue careers in science and technology.

The valedictory function included the prize distribution, proposal of Vote of Thanks by Priyanka V,  scientist – UR Rao Satellite Centre – ISRO. The event was coordinated by Shweta Ganapathy, Academic Coordinator and Teena Machaiah, senior teacher. Manasa Thimmaiah, Public Relation Officer compered the programme.  Somaiah C S, Resident Manager and  Chermana K M, Mess Manager were acknowledged by the ISRO team for their yeomen service. The celebration was a resounding success, sparking curiosity and interest in science and space exploration among students. The event concluded with the National Anthem.
