Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Dr. Venkat Raja inaugurated the “Environmental Walk” organized as part of the 71st Wildlife Week 2025 at the Forest Department premises in Madikeri, under the theme “Human-Animal Coexistence.” The event was jointly organized by the School Education Department, Karnataka State Science Council, Kodagu District Committee, National Green Force Eco Club, Bharat Scouts and Guides District Unit, and NSS units of various institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Venkat Raja emphasized that the conservation of forests, wildlife, and biodiversity is essential for the well-being of future generations. He said that coexistence with wildlife is the key to preserving the natural environment and that protecting forests and wildlife is a shared responsibility of every citizen.
He added that students should be encouraged to develop environmental awareness and participate in conservation activities. Kodagu, he noted, is a model district for environmental preservation.
Principal District and Sessions Judge Hosamani Pundalik flagged off the awareness rally and wished it success.
T.G. Premakumar, President of the District Committee of the Karnataka State Science Council and Convener of the District Environmental Awareness Movement, administered the environmental pledge and highlighted the need to protect forests, rivers, lakes, and wildlife.
He said that the growing human-wildlife conflict must be addressed by adopting a lifestyle that respects nature and maintains ecological balance.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Division) K.A. Nehru stated that Wildlife Week programs are aimed at raising awareness among the public about forest and wildlife protection. Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat Anand Prakash Meena, Deputy Conservators of Forests V. Abhishek (Regional), Sandeep P. Abhayankar (Social Forestry), and Syed Ahmed Shah Hussaini (Vigilance), Probationary IFS Officers Sendil Kumar and Tesin Banu, and Additional Superintendent of Police Barike Dinesh Kumar were present.
The rally began from the Madikeri Forest Office and concluded at Salumarada Thimmakka Park, covering a 4 km route via General Thimmaiah Circle, Town Hall, and Mahadevpet. Students from various schools, NSS units, and the Eco Club of Kudumangaluru Government High School participated, carrying placards with slogans promoting forest and wildlife conservation.
