Comments:

The proposed construction of a Glass Bridge and Food Court at Rajaseat triggered intense discussion during an emergency meeting of the Madikeri Municipal Council, chaired by Council President P. Kalavathi.

Controversy arose as several council members claimed they were not informed of the tender process.

The meeting witnessed protests by Congress and BJP members, with some opposing the project entirely and others objecting to the lack of prior consultation.

Key Highlights from the Debate:

B.Y. Rajesh (Congress) said the council, being part of the government, should not oppose government projects.

Mahesh Jaini (Vice President) countered, stating even MP Yaduveer and former minister M.C. Nanaiah had opposed the project, questioning its necessity.

SDPI Members Mansoor and Amin Mohisin expressed dissatisfaction over the council being bypassed, comparing it to the previous zipline project at Rajaseat.

Umesh Subramani (BJP) raised concerns about potential landslides in the monsoon and questioned the project’s viability in an ecologically sensitive area like Rajaseat.

K.S. Ramesh supported the idea of the Glass Bridge but suggested relocating it if Rajaseat proves unsuitable, expressing disappointment over the lack of consultation.

Council President Kalavathi clarified that the emergency meeting was convened due to growing public concern over the project’s environmental impact during the monsoon season. She emphasized that the council’s intent was to ensure any project undertaken is safe and beneficial for all.

After extended deliberation, the council resolved to oppose the implementation of the Glass Bridge and Food Court project without proper consultation and decided to convene another meeting once full project details are received.
