Addiction-Free Day Observed: Focus on Building a Healthy Life

Observing Addiction-Free Day on the birth anniversary of Dr. Mahant Shivayogi, a program was held at the Government Junior College auditorium, jointly organized by the State Liquor Control Board, District Administration, and various departments including Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education, School and Pre-University Education, and Social Welfare.

DySP P.A. Suraj, inaugurating the program, called on the younger generation to steer clear of addictions and focus on building a better future. He warned that addiction to alcohol and drugs destroys lives and careers.He emphasized that the Police Department, in coordination with other departments, continues to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. He also cautioned that if anyone is caught driving under the influence of alcohol, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed, and the driving license suspended. Repeat offenses will result in license cancellation. Suraj further highlighted a recent drug trafficking network busted by Maharashtra Police in Mysuru, stressing the importance of students being alert and reporting any suspicious activity to helpline 112. 

Chidanand Kumar, Deputy Director of Pre-University Education, urged students to avoid alcohol and drugs and focus on building a healthy society. He also emphasized the importance of healthy eating habits and praised Dr. Shivayogi’s contributions toward an addiction-free community. 

Dr. Sanath Kumar, District TB Control Officer, spoke about the physiological and psychological impacts of substance abuse. He advised students to channel their restlessness into academics and positive activities. Principal Vijay encouraged students to engage in socially productive efforts. Dr. Devin Karkada, psychiatrist from the District Health Department, warned that addiction can lead to serious mental health disorders and emphasized that drug use and trafficking are punishable offenses. He also introduced the National Tele-Mental Health Program, where individuals facing exam stress, addiction, family issues, or any psychological distress can access help by calling the toll-free helpline 14416.                                        

Chinnaswamy, Assistant Director of the Information and Public Relations Department, welcomed the gathering. Lecturer Chidananda compered the event, students offered a prayer, and Lecturer Purnima proposed the vote of thanks.
