Kodagu police have arrested five individuals, including a minor, for threatening and extorting Rs 7 lakh from a man by impersonating cyber police.
The arrests were made following a complaint by Parashivamurthy, a resident of Madapatna village under Kushalnagar Police Station limits. The accused have been identified as Ibrahim Badshah (25) of BoikeriHaleri village in Madikeri taluk, Raghavendra B.M. (19) of Melukote Balaghatta village in Pandavapura taluk, Sangeetha (30) of Banashankari, Bengaluru, Charan C.K. (19) of Dravida Colony in Kushalnagar, and a minor boy.
In November 2024, Parashivamurthy received threatening phone calls from unknown persons who introduced themselves as cyber police. They alleged that a case had been filed against him for harassing girls through social media messages and comments. They demanded money to “settle” the case and threatened to arrest him in front of his neighbors if he did not comply. Through persistent threats, they managed to extort Rs7 lakh in cash.
A complaint was formally filed at Kushalnagar Police Station on January 11, 2025. A special team led by DySP P. Chandrashekhar, PI Prakash B.G., PSI Geetha, and station staff successfully arrested the accused and seized four mobile phones.
Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan appreciated the swift and effective action taken by the police team.
