Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has ordered a study on the retention capacity of the Western Ghats in light of recent landslides in Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu during pre-monsoon rains.
In written instructions to the Additional Chief Secretaries, Khandre noted that extensive infrastructure projects in the Western Ghats pose ecological threats, including property and crop damage, loss of life, and distress to wildlife.
He directed the Member Secretary of the Biodiversity Board, the Evaluation, Planning, Research and Training division, and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to submit a comprehensive report within three months.
Highlighting the ecological importance of the Ghats-which contain 60% of Karnataka’s forests and support a rich array of flora and fauna-Khandre emphasized their role in attracting monsoon rains and urged urgent conservation efforts.
