“Literature has the power to unite, not divide,” said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during a felicitation ceremony honoring Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq, organized by the Kannada and Culture Department at the Banquet Hall.
Congratulating Banu Mushtaq, the Chief Minister acknowledged her contribution to Kannada literature and noted how her recognition has brought pride to the Kannada-speaking world. He announced a cash award of Rs10 lakh each for Banu Mushtaq and Deepa Basti, in recognition of their contribution to Kannada literature and translation.

The government also pledged support for the publication and English translation of Banu’s stories.
Describing her as a multifaceted personality-a journalist, writer, lawyer, and activist-the Chief Minister emphasized that Banu’s writings carry a deep social message. Her earlier journalistic work in Lankesh and her advocacy for the underprivileged were highlighted, along with her receipt of the prestigious Rajyotsava Award.
Banu was praised for her bold voice representing Muslim women and her commitment to progressive values. The CM compared her contributions to those of cultural icons such as Pampa, Basavanna, and Akka Mahadevi, emphasizing that she has carried forward their legacy of inclusive and compassionate thought.
