At CLN Online, we are trying to bring interesting stories like the series on Appanna Ajja of his school days and growing up years. We have an interesting collection of similar anecdotes relating to our legendary Field Marshal K M Cariappa, which we will be publishing online as a series of anecdotes.
General Cariappa always carried a candle and a match box on his person.
On one occasion he was attending a recital by the renowned singer M S Subbulakshmi at Bangalore, when the lights suddenly went out. She continued to sing and the large audience continued to listen in silence. He took out the candle from his pocket, lit it and placed it on the dais.
With this solitary light burning, Subbulakshmi continued and the whole scene took a fairyland atmosphere.
Sourced from Major K C Praval’s records. Major Praval was hosted by General Cariappa at his house in Madikeri, from 6th to 12th January, 1979. Sentences have been edited for ease of reading.
Thank you for sharing the wonderful anecdote from the life of General Cariappa – the story of the candle and the matchbox and the Kacheri of Subbulakshmi. In a public lecture at Kottayam public library on the threats to human future and openness to new possibilities, I cited by name your post which the audience greatly appreciated.
In spite of thickening darkness around, a little good sense and a positive spark of light will work wonders. The music of life will continue unfettered.
Thank you so much.
Lovely reading this post. I can vouch for the chivalry and respect Kodavas have for Women – I have encountered and shared professional workspaces with Kodava colleagues who are gems.
Delightful stories. Keep them rolling.
