The world rainforest day was observed on the premises of the office of range forest officer at Makutta, Virajpet division,amid thick forest to raise awareness about the vital role rainforest play in maintaining the health of our planet. The participants stressed the urgent need to protect them.
Dean of College of forestry, Ponnampet, Devagiri said that even the handful of rainforests that are present in the world are disappearing over the years. If the situation continues, there is a possibility that the temperature of the earth will increase by six degrees in the next 10 years, he warned. Later, he discussed on the spread of rainforests, global temperature and importance of Western Ghats.
College of forestry retired dean C G Kushalappa spoke on the importance and conservation of rainforest.
RFO Suhana Harish Attavar said that Makutta range has received an average of 5,500 mm rainfall in the last 20 years. The rainforest in Makutta is known for vast biodiversity. The rainforests have 20% of the biodiversity in the world. Protecting the rainforests will help in saving biodiversity.
Teachers of college of forestry, students, students of Morarji Desai Residential School, students of college of forest from Shivamogga, students and teachers of Makutta Lower Primary Malayalam School, villagers of Heggala walked inside the rainforest for two kilometres. Quiz competition was held on the occasion. DCF Jagannath presided over the programme.
