Police Martyrs’ Day Observed

The Police Commemoration  Day was observed by the District Police Unit at the District Police Parade Ground in  Madikeri recently.

Dignitaries and guests paid their respects by offering floral tributes at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial. Parade Commander R.P. Ganesh led the observance and received permission from the chief guest to begin the proceedings.

The chief guests included G.P. CEO Anand Prakash Meena, District Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan, Additional Superintendent of Police Barike Dinesh Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Kumar, Police Inspector I.P. Medappa of the Intelligence Division, P.A. Nanjappa representing the District Police Clerical Staff, Appiah on behalf of Retired Police Officers, Monnappa representing Retired Army Officers, Sanjay Jatti representing the District Prison, P. Kalavathi as President and Anitha Poovaiah representing the CMC, C.T. Joseph on behalf of the Lawyers’ Association, Chinnaswamy on behalf of the Media,  Lalitha Raghavan on behalf of the Rotary Organisation, Madan representing the Lions Organisation, Santosh representing the Businessmen’s Association, Dinesh representing the Hotel Association, M.N. Muthappa representing Kodava Societies, Surtale Somanna representing Gowda Societies, Amin Mohisin representing the Muslim Unions, Govindaraju representing Police Sub-Inspectors, Band Master Chennakeshava, Dhananjaya representing the Non-Commissioned Division, Sumathi representing the Women Police, and Major Cariappa representing Retired Army Officers. All offered floral tributes at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial and paid homage.

Three rounds of salute were fired by the Police Parade Team, followed by the National Anthem played by the Police Band Team. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs.

District Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan read out the names of police personnel who lost their lives while on duty. During 2024-25, a total of 191 police officers and personnel were martyred across the country while maintaining law and order, including eight from Karnataka. They are: PSI MeboobGuddalil (Bengaluru City), ASI Venkatachalapathy K.N. (KGF), ARSI Girish S. (DAR Tumkur), Basavaraj M. (Bengaluru District), Ningraj T.S. (DAR Tumkur District), Prakash B.U. (11th Battalion KSRP Hassan), Mahesh N.R. (Bengaluru City), and Ramappa Poojary (DAR Davanagere District).

Ramarajan said the service rendered by the police in ensuring internal security is unparalleled. He highlighted their crucial role in maintaining peace, order, and protecting society from destructive forces.

Speaking on the occasion, G.P. CEO Anand Prakash Meena commended the courage and commitment of the police personnel, noting that they perform their duties at great personal risk to ensure peace and harmony in society. He recalled the bravery of the police who have defended the nation’s borders and contributed significantly to internal security.

“Law and order and a peaceful environment are vital for the nation’s progress and development. In that regard, the performance of the police in safeguarding internal security is commendable,” he said.

He added that just as the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy protect the country’s external and internal borders, the sacrifices of police personnel who ensure internal security must also be remembered and honoured. He emphasised the need to support and encourage the families of police martyrs.

Police officers from all levels of the district were present at the event. Police officer Farooq delivered the vote of thanks.
