Members of the Coorg Lorry Drivers and Owners Association, supported by the Kodagu Timber Traders and Trade Union, staged a protest in Madikeri, demanding a review of the district administration’s order banning the movement of heavy vehicles in Kodagu.
The protest was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, with participants demanding uniform enforcement of the law, as vehicles from other districts are reportedly not subjected to the same restrictions.
Former Zilla Panchayat member Viju Subramani criticized the ban, citing the impact on livelihoods, particularly for labourers, drivers, and vehicle owners. He also highlighted human-elephant conflicts, stating that the challenges faced by farmers and workers are being overlooked.
Mohammed Iqbal, District President of the Coorg Lorry Drivers and Owners Association, echoed similar concerns, pointing out that while local vehicles are restricted, out-of-district vehicles continue to operate freely, leaving local operators at a disadvantage.
Association leaders M. Ashraf, M. Aziz, Huraid, Shamir, Urais, Shyam, N.D. Kuttappa, and others participated in the protest and warned of intensifying the agitation if their demands are not addressed.
