Kodagu Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Venkat Raja speaking at natural disaster management meeting held at his office hall recently informed that Kodagu district is receiving average rainfall now and directed that the authorities to be ready always to face any natural calamities due to heavy rainfall in the coming days as informed by IMD.
He also said that compared to the last year, it is raining better this time and the lakes, streams and rivers are overflowing and added that more attention should be paid to natural calamity as there is a possibility of more rain in the coming days.
The DC suggested that hobli-wise nodal officers have already been assigned to deal with natural calamities, and they should visit their hobli area at least once a week to get information related to any natural calamities and should inform about the measures to be followed in case of heavy rains.
Tashalidars should share information from time to time about weather forecast at local level regarding rainfall in their areas. A meeting should be held at the taluk level and at the Gram Panchayat (GP) level frequently and all should be ready to face if any natural calamities happen, the DC said.
In case of heavy rainfall, field education officers should inform the DDPI regarding situation of the rainfall in their area in turn DDPI should discus with the district administration and have to take proper decision regarding declaring a holiday.
More awareness should be created by arranging a ‘demonstration’ about carrying out rescue operation with NDRF, police, fire brigade and others in regard to natural calamities. Information should be given about the precautions to be taken in case of heavy rainfall and added that in case of heavy rain, necessary steps must be taken to carry out rescue works.
All kinds of precautionary measures should be taken during heavy rainfall and in case of emergency all should be aware how to tackle the situation, DC informed
In case of natural calamity care should be taken to avoid any kind of loss of life and also to make arrangements to safe guard pet animals and advised that no one should go to reservoirs and rivers at that time
A large number of tourists are visiting even now in rainy season to various tourist spots of the district and hence proper guidance should be given to the tourists by the local bodies and sign boards should be placed in the danger spots and tourists should not be allowed to visit reservoirs and rivers, and in this regard proper security persons should be placed, DC informed.
During July and August,the district has witnessed the highest rainfall in the last three years since 2018 the DC said and advised to officials to be accountable to the public. Besides, it is very important that Tahsildar gives information from time to time to the local bodies, he added.
