Obituary: Maletira Jagat Nanjappa

Maletira Jagat Nanjappa, one of India’s best-known motor rally drivers and a pioneering figure in Indian motorsport, passed away in Mysuru on August 30, 2026. He was 68.

His last rites were  performed at his residence in Nalvathoklu, Virajpet.

Jagat played a significant role in shaping India’s motor rally scene, participating in numerous national and international rallies and bringing recognition to Kodagu through his achievements. His fearless riding, competitive spirit and ability to push machines to their limits made him a formidable presence on the rally circuit.

His association with motorsport was inseparable from that of his wife Anitha, who accompanied him through much of his rallying journey. The couple became a familiar and much-admired presence on the circuit.

From the Yezdi Roadking 250 cc to the K1000 and Coffee 500, Jagat turned machines into competitive rally bikes. He was particularly renowned for his performances in desert rallies, where his determination and riding skills earned him pole positions and trophies.

The engines may have fallen silent, but the memory of Jaggi and the roar of his machines will endure.
