Nayada Vasu Nanjappa was the embodiment of hockey in Kodagu, dedicating his life to the sport and nurturing generations of young players. Several players who trained under his guidance went on to represent the country and don the national colours.
A talented full-back, Nanjappa represented the Coorg Teachers’ team and earned the nickname “The Wall” for his formidable defensive skills. It was said that no ball could get past him. His commitment to developing young talent was equally remarkable, and he regularly organised coaching camps for children during the summer holidays. A Physical Director by profession, Nanjappa devoted himself wholeheartedly to hockey, giving the sport every ounce of his energy and time. His contribution extended beyond the playing field, as he remained actively involved in the social and cultural life of the Kodava community.
Nanjappa also served as president of the Kodava Samaj and was deeply rooted in Kodava culture and traditions. He was known for manually wearing the traditional Coorg turban. He was also remembered for dispensing herbal remedies, including traditional green medicine for jaundice.
His contribution to hockey was recognised by several stalwarts of the sport. Among those who paid tribute to Nanjappa was former Indian hockey player K.K. Poonacha, who scored the 47th-minute goal against Belgium during the 1994 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Australia.
For generations of hockey players in Kodagu, Nayada Vasu Nanjappa remained more than a coach and player. He was a mentor, guardian of the sport and a passionate custodian of Kodava culture.
