Colonel (Retd) C.P. Muthanna, President of the Environment and Health Foundation, has urged authorities not to permit asphalt and concrete mixing plants in rural areas of Kodagu district, citing serious environmental and health concerns.
Addressing a press conference in Madikeri, he warned that pollution from such plants poses risks, particularly to pregnant women and infants. He called upon Gram Panchayats and villagers to remain vigilant and oppose the establishment of these units.
Colonel Muthanna said a decision has been taken to shut down the asphalt plant in Echur village of South Kodagu by May 31, following protests by villagers. He thanked MLA A.S. Ponnanna for responding promptly to the issue and expressed confidence that district legislators would prevent similar plants in future. Foundation members Shyam Bopaiah and Roy Bopanna were present.
