Agriculture Minister and Kodagu District In-charge Minister P.M. Narendra Swamy has cautioned that adverse weather conditions linked to the El Niño phenomenon could result in serious challenges during the next two to three months.

He was speaking after inaugurating the taluk-level Praja Seva Andolana programme organised by the Virajpet taluk administration near Virajpet recently.

The Minister observed that weather anomalies caused by the El Niño effect are being experienced across the world. As a result, challenges such as reduced food production, shortages of livestock fodder, and scarcity of drinking water are likely to emerge in the coming months.

He urged people and authorities to take necessary precautionary measures, noting that temperatures could rise by three to six degrees Celsius in the near future.

The Minister further stated that rainfall is expected to decline in the coming days, although some light showers may occur owing to cyclonic activity.

According to him, this information was shared during a recent conference of Agriculture Ministers held in New Delhi.

He assured the gathering that issues concerning Kodagu district would be brought to the attention of the government and that efforts would be made to fill vacant posts in the district administration.

P.M. Narendra Swamy said that the government had launched the Prajaseva Abhiyana to address public grievances and facilitate solutions through meetings conducted at the taluk, hobli, and Gram Panchayat levels.

He added that, apart from implementing the Govt’s Guarantee Schemes, several other welfare programmes are being undertaken to ensure transparent governance.

On the occasion, the Minister also announced that under Agriculture Department initiatives, the government would undertake the ploughing of landholdings of up to three acres, thereby eliminating the need for farmers to deploy their own agricultural machinery. Addressing the gathering, Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s Political Secretary A.S. Ponnanna spoke about the government’s Prajaseva Andolana programmes being conducted at different administrative levels. He urged officials to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, efficiency, and integrity.

He further stated that the government is committed to the welfare and development of all sections of society and encouraged citizens to take advantage of the various welfare schemes available.

Among those present were Kodagu District In-charge Secretary Dr. N.V. Prasad, State Vice-President of the Sports Authority Arun Machayya, District President of the Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee Dharmaja Uthappa, Taluk President Johnson, Chairman of the Bagar Hukum Committee Abdul Salam, DC S.J. Somashekhar, S P R.N. Bindumani, D C F V. Abhishek, the Tahsildar, and several district and taluk-level officials.

Information stalls and exhibitions were organised by various departments including Revenue, Health and Family Welfare, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Women and Child Development, CESC, Social Welfare, Backward Classes Welfare, Integrated Tribal Welfare, and Food and Civil Supplies. The Minister visited the stalls and reviewed the exhibits.
