Dr. Anil Dhawan, Designated Officer of the Kodagu District Food Safety and Drug Control Department, has urged medicine dealers to conduct their businesses transparently, serve customers responsibly and keep abreast of changing laws and regulations.
He was speaking after inaugurating the World Pharmacists Day celebrations organised by the Kodagu Chemists and Druggists Association at Pharma Bhavan in Madikeri.
Dr. Dhawan said every dealer must obtain the required food licence and stressed that ensuring the quality of food and medicines supplied to consumers should be a priority. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against dealers if complaints were received in this regard. Association president Ambekallu Jeevan Kushalappa said pharmacists celebrate the day to recognise and honour the services they render to society. He said the association now has its own building in Kodagu and would use the facility to organise innovative programmes and meetings aimed at serving society.
District Assistant Drug Controller Ajay Raj Shah said regulations governing the sale of medicines are constantly evolving. He urged pharmaceutical traders to keep themselves informed and ensure compliance with government regulations. He also said the government had, for the first time, introduced a scheme to recognise and honour outstanding pharmaceutical professionals.
Dr. Karumbayya, Chief Medical Officer of the Kodagu Blood Bank, highlighted the importance of blood donation, noting that donated blood helps save lives during emergencies. He said Kodagu faces a shortage of blood and stressed the need for more donation camps to strengthen the district’s blood reserves.
Prasad Gowda, Treasurer of the Kodagu Pharmaceutical Traders’ Association, introduced the guests, while Joint Secretary Vasanth Kumar anchored the programme. Ramya Prasad rendered the invocation, and General Secretary D.T. Purushotham was present on the dais. Pharmaceutical traders from various parts of Kodagu participated in the blood donation camp, which collected 23 units of blood. Association directors A.K. Vinod, Prasad, Chandrashekhar, Kiran Kundar, Dhananjay Shastri, Gautam Prasad and Vivek were among those who took part.
The State Government has, from this year, begun honouring pharmaceutical traders who have demonstrated outstanding performance in their respective districts on Pharmaceutical Traders’ Day.
Sudarshan Rai of Sri Ganesh Medicals, Virajpet, was selected for the honour this year. He and his wife, Vijayalakshmi Rai, were felicitated at the programme.
