Koraput coffee from Odisha was featured in gift hampers presented to delegates at the BRICS Summit, giving the region’s tribal-grown Arabica coffee international exposure. The move highlights Odisha as an emerging, non-traditional coffee-growing region and supports efforts to promote tribal livelihoods and regional development under the “Vocal for Local” initiative.
While Karnataka’s Coorg is one of India’s established and GI-tagged coffee origins, the choice of Koraput appears to reflect an effort to showcase lesser-known regions, tribal producers and emerging local enterprises on a global platform.
It is important that Koraput Coffee from Odisha establishes relaiable supply chain and quality standards befitting export channels. To a large extent this applies to Coffee being sold from Coorg platations also, where wholesale buyers are the collection agents for exporters from Kerala with a very rudimentary quality and supply chain standards. Ultimately, this reflects on the price reliazation, especially by the small growers.

A new challenge for Coorg coffee has risen. As they say “We shall overcome”.We have to face this attempted challenge headon and show our managerial skills beyond Coorg in the Koraput landscapes.
