The Health Department has intensified surveillance and precautionary measures against influenza (H1N1) in Kodagu and advised the public to take necessary precautions.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Satish Kumar said around 3,762 cases of cold, cough and fever have been reported in the district since January. Of 11 cases of acute respiratory distress detected, four have tested positive for H1N1 at the District Hospital in Madikeri. Fever clinics have been established at primary health centres, taluk hospitals and the district hospital, while separate viral wards have been arranged for suspected cases. Adequate stocks of essential medicines, including oseltamivir for serious cases, have been made available.

People with fever, cough, sore throat, breathing difficulty or other flu-like symptoms have been advised to stay home, avoid crowded places and seek treatment at the nearest government hospital. Children, senior citizens, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses have been advised to take extra precautions.

The department has urged people to cover their nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing, wash their hands regularly, drink plenty of fluids and wear masks in crowded places. They should avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth, self-medication and unnecessary contact with others when symptomatic.

Schools and colleges have also been instructed to immediately inform health officials if students develop symptoms.

The Health Department has appealed to the public not to panic and to cooperate with measures to prevent the spread of influenza.
